In Mode 3, we use simple tenses to talk about habits, facts, and completed actions. We’ll also show the difference between Declarations and Affirmations, which helps with Negations and Interrogations.

Simple Present

  • Declaration: I like sunny weather. (A simple statement of fact)
  • Affirmation: I do like sunny weather. (Emphasizes the statement, often used to contradict or confirm)
    • Negation: I do not like humid weather.
    • Interrogation: Do you like cold winters?
  • Declaration: She prefers warm climates.
  • Affirmation: She does prefer warm climates.
    • Negation: She does not prefer very hot summers.

Simple Past

  • She has never experienced a blizzard.
  • We have seen many different climates.

Past Perfect (Completed before another past action)

  • Before this trip, I had never felt such humidity. (First, I never felt humidity; then, I took the trip.)
  • They had already packed their raincoats when the sun came out.
  • He had wished for snow for months before it finally arrived.

Future Perfect (Will be completed before a future point)

  • By next year, I will have visited many warm countries. (By next year, the action of visiting will be complete.)

  • Can/Could: I can tolerate hot weather, but I could not live in a desert.
  • Should/Must: You should bring an umbrella; it might rain. We must prepare for the cold.
  • May/Might: It may be sunny tomorrow, or it might be cloudy.
  • Will/Would: I will definitely choose a warm vacation. I would prefer a cool evening.

WH-Questions (Asking for specific information)

  • What: What kind of weather do you prefer?
  • Where: Where is the best place for a snowy vacation?
  • When: When is the rainy season in your country?
