Hello everyone! Welcome to our English lesson. Today, we will learn how to describe your home. You will learn new words and how to make simple sentences. This is important for talking about where you live.

1. Rooms in a Home

First, let’s learn the names of different rooms in a home. A home has many rooms.

  • Living Room: This is a room where you relax. You can watch TV or talk with family.
  • Bedroom: This is a room where you sleep. It has a bed.
  • Kitchen: This is a room where you cook food. You find a stove and a refrigerator here.
  • Bathroom: This is a room where you wash yourself. It has a toilet and a shower or bathtub.
  • Dining Room: This is a room where you eat meals. It often has a big table.
  • Hallway / Hall: This is a long, narrow space. It connects different rooms.
  • Balcony: This is an outdoor space connected to an apartment or house, often with a nice view.
  • Garden / Yard: This is an outdoor area around a house, often with grass and plants.

Examples:

  • My home has a big living room.
  • I sleep in my bedroom.
  • My mom cooks in the kitchen.
  • My house has two bathrooms.

2. Furniture and Items in Each Room

Now, let’s learn about things we find inside each room. These are called furniture or items.

In the Living Room:

  • Sofa / Couch: A long, soft seat for more than one person.
  • Armchair: A comfortable chair for one person.
  • TV (Television): You watch shows and movies here.
  • Table (Coffee Table / Side Table): A small table.
  • Lamp: Gives light.
  • Rug / Carpet: A soft covering for the floor.

Examples:

  • In my living room, there is a sofa.
  • There is a TV on a table.

In the Bedroom:

  • Bed: You sleep here.
  • Wardrobe / Closet: You put your clothes here.
  • Dresser / Chest of Drawers: A furniture piece with drawers for clothes.
  • Nightstand / Bedside Table: A small table next to the bed.
  • Lamp: For light, often on the nightstand.

Examples:

In the Kitchen:

  • Refrigerator / Fridge: Keeps food cold.
  • Stove / Cooker: You cook food here.
  • Oven: You bake food here.
  • Sink: You wash dishes here.
  • Table and Chairs: For eating.
  • Microwave: Heats food fast.

Examples:

  • My kitchen has a large refrigerator.
  • We have a new stove.

In the Bathroom:

  • Toilet: For using the restroom.
  • Shower: You stand and wash here.
  • Bathtub: You sit and wash here.
  • Sink: You wash your hands here.
  • Mirror: You look at yourself here.

Examples:

  • The bathroom has a shower and a toilet.
  • There is a big mirror above the sink.

In the Dining Room:

  • Dining Table: A big table for eating meals.
  • Chairs: To sit around the dining table.

Examples:

  • Our dining room has a wooden dining table.
  • There are six chairs.

3. Using “There is” and “There are”

We use “There is” for one thing. We use “There are” for two or more things.

  • There is a TV in the living room. (One TV)
  • There are two bedrooms in my house. (More than one bedroom)
  • There is a big bed in my bedroom.
  • There are many books on the shelf.

4. Prepositions of Place (Where things are)

These words tell us where something is.

  • In: Inside something.
    • The clothes are in the wardrobe.
    • The food is in the refrigerator.
  • On: On the surface of something.
    • The lamp is on the nightstand.
    • The TV is on the table.
  • Under: Below something.
    • The cat is under the bed.
    • My shoes are under the chair.
  • Next to: Beside something.
    • The sofa is next to the window.
    • The nightstand is next to the bed.
  • Between: In the middle of two things.
    • The small table is between two armchairs.
    • The bathroom is between the kitchen and the bedroom.

5. Describing Size and Features (Adjectives)

We use adjectives to describe how something looks or its size.

  • Big / Large: Not small.
    • My living room is big.
    • We have a large garden.
  • Small / Little: Not big.
    • My bedroom is small.
    • I have a little balcony.
  • New: Not old.
    • We bought a new refrigerator.
    • My sofa is new.
  • Old: Not new.
    • My table is old, but I like it.
    • We have an old TV.
  • Clean: Not dirty.
    • My kitchen is always clean.
    • The bathroom is clean.
  • Dirty: Not clean.
    • The floor is dirty.
    • My clothes are dirty.
  • Bright: Full of light.
    • My living room is very bright.
  • Dark: Not bright, little light.
    • My hallway is a little dark.

6. Let’s Describe a Room!

Now, let’s put it all together and describe a room.

Example Description of a Living Room:

My living room is big and bright. There is a large sofa. It is next to the window. There are two armchairs. A small coffee table is between the armchairs. On the coffee table, there is a lamp. We have a big TV. It is on a TV stand. My living room has a soft rug on the floor.

Example Description of a Bedroom:

My bedroom is small but cozy. There is one big bed. It is next to the wall. On the left side of the bed, there is a nightstand. A lamp is on the nightstand. There is a wardrobe for my clothes. The wardrobe is next to the door. My bedroom has a small window.
