6 – Visiting the Post Office

MODE 1 (The Foundation): ‘To Be’ at the Post Office
In this mode, we use only ‘to be’ verbs: am, are, is, was, were, will be. We use them to describe things and states. Remember, no action words here!
Present ‘To Be’
Use am, is, are for now.
- I am a customer. (Right now, I am here.)
- This letter is small. (It is small now.)
- The stamps are red. (They are red now.)
- The post office is open. (It is open now.)
Past ‘To Be’
Use was, were for before now.
- I was at the post office yesterday. (Yesterday, I was there.)
- The clerk was friendly. (Before, she was friendly.)
- The letters were on the table. (Before, they were there.)
- The post office was closed on Sunday. (On Sunday, it was closed.)
Future ‘To Be’
Use will be for later.
- I will be at the post office tomorrow. (Tomorrow, I will be there.)
- My package will be ready soon. (Soon, it will be ready.)
- The boxes will be in stock next week. (Next week, they will be there.)
- The post office will be busy later. (Later, it will be busy.)
Vocabulary for Mode 1
- Customer: A person who buys things.
- Clerk: A person who helps you at the counter.
- Stamps: Small papers for letters.
- Package: A box with things inside.
- Open: Not closed.
- Closed: Not open.

Fill in the blank with am, is, are, was, were, will be:

MODE 2 (The Flow): ‘To Be’ + Continuous Action
In this mode, we use ‘to be’ + an -ing word (verb + -ing). This shows actions that are happening or were happening for a period of time. It shows flow.
Present Continuous (Now)
Use am/is/are + -ing for actions happening right now.
- I am standing at the counter. (I am doing it now.)
- The clerk is weighing my package. (She is doing it now.)
- People are buying stamps. (They are doing it now.)
Past Continuous (Before)
Use was/were + -ing for actions that were happening in the past.
- I was waiting for help. (I was doing it before.)
- The mail truck was driving away. (It was doing it before.)
- They were talking about letters. (They were doing it before.)
Future Continuous (Later)
Use will be + -ing for actions that will be happening later.
- I will be sending a letter tomorrow. (I will be doing it tomorrow.)
- The post office will be closing soon. (It will be doing it soon.)
- We will be waiting for the mailman. (We will be doing it later.)
Vocabulary for Mode 2
- Standing: On your feet.
- Weighing: Finding out how heavy something is.
- Buying: Getting something for money.
- Waiting: Staying until something happens.
- Driving away: Leaving in a car or truck.
- Talking: Speaking with words.
- Sending: Making something go to another place.
Practice for Mode 2
Change the verb to the correct continuous form:
- I _______ (buy) stamps now.
- She _______ (help) a customer yesterday. (Past)
- They _______ (send) a package next week. (Future)
- The clerk _______ (check) the address. (Now)
- We _______ (wait) for the line to move. (Now)

MODE 3 (The Perspective): Simple Tenses
Here we use simple tenses: Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future. We also learn about Declarations (just telling something) and Affirmations (saying something is really true, good for negatives and questions).
Simple Present Tense (Regular actions)
- Declaration: I send letters. (I do it regularly.)
- Affirmation: I do send letters. (Yes, it is true.)
- Negation: I do not send big packages.
- Interrogation: Do you send letters?
Examples:
- The post office opens at 9 AM. (Declaration)
- The post office does open at 9 AM. (Affirmation)
- It does not open on holidays. (Negation)
- Does it open early? (Interrogation)
Simple Past Tense (Finished actions)
- Declaration: I mailed a letter yesterday. (It finished.)
- Affirmation: I did mail a letter yesterday. (Yes, it is true.)
- Negation: I did not mail a package.
- Interrogation: Did you mail a letter?
Examples:
- She bought stamps. (Declaration)
- She did buy stamps. (Affirmation)
- She did not buy envelopes. (Negation)
- Did she buy stamps? (Interrogation)
Simple Future Tense (Actions later)
- Declaration: I will visit the post office. (I will do it later.)
- Affirmation: I will visit the post office. (Yes, it is true.)
- Negation: I will not visit tomorrow.
- Interrogation: Will you visit the post office?
Examples:
- He will send the postcard. (Declaration)
- He will send the postcard. (Affirmation)
- He will not send a big box. (Negation)
- Will he send the postcard? (Interrogation)
Vocabulary for Mode 3
- Mail: To send a letter or package. (Also, letters/packages themselves.)
- Buy: Get for money.
- Visit: Go to a place.
- Open: To start work or business.
- Postcard: A card for mailing.
- Envelope: A paper cover for a letter.
Practice for Mode 3
Change the sentence to a Negation or Interrogation:
- She needs a stamp. (Negation) -> She _______ need a stamp.
- He sent a package. (Interrogation) -> _______ he send a package?
- They will buy more boxes. (Negation) -> They _______ buy more boxes.
- You want to mail this. (Interrogation) -> _______ you want to mail this?
- I waited in line. (Negation) -> I _______ wait in line.

MODE 4 (The Completion): Perfect Tenses
We use Perfect Tenses to talk about actions that are finished at a certain point in time. It uses have/has/had/will have + past participle.
Present Perfect (Finished now, or experience)
Use have/has + past participle. It means an action finished recently, or happened at some point before now.
- I have sent many letters. (I finished this action many times before now.)
- She has bought new stamps. (She finished buying them.)
- The post office has opened for the day. (It finished opening.)
Past Perfect (Finished before another past action)
Use had + past participle. It means an action finished before another action in the past.
- I had sent the package before the store closed. (Sending finished first.)
- They had mailed all the invitations before the party. (Mailing finished first.)
- The clerk had helped five people before my turn. (Helping finished first.)
Future Perfect (Finished before a future time)
Use will have + past participle. It means an action will be finished before a specific time in the future.
- By noon, I will have mailed my letters. (Mailing will be finished by noon.)
- By next week, she will have received her package. (Receiving will be finished by next week.)
- The post office will have closed by 6 PM. (Closing will be finished by 6 PM.)

MODE 5 (The Strategy): Modals & WH-Questions
This mode helps you ask questions and express possibilities, abilities, and needs. This is very useful at the post office!
MODALS
Modals are special helping verbs. They change the meaning of the main verb.
- Can (ability/permission): I can send this package. Can I buy stamps?
- Could (past ability/polite request): I could not find the address. Could you help me?
- Shall (suggestion/future – formal): Shall we go to the post office now? (Less common for questions, use ‘will’ for future.)
- Should (advice/recommendation): You should write your return address.
- Will (future/certainty): I will mail this soon.
- Would (polite request/hypothetical): Would you like a tracking number?
- May (permission/possibility): May I use a different box? It may rain later.
- Might (less possibility): The package might be late.
- Must (necessity/strong obligation): You must pay for postage.
WH-QUESTIONS
These words help us ask for specific information.
- Who: Asks about a person. Who works at the post office? (The clerk.)
- Whose: Asks about possession. Whose package is this? (It is my package.)
- What: Asks about a thing or idea. What do you need? (I need stamps.)
- Where: Asks about a place. Where is the post office? (It is on Main Street.)
- When: Asks about a time. When does it open? (It opens at 9 AM.)
- Why: Asks for a reason. Why are you here? (I am here to send a letter.)
- Which: Asks about a choice. Which stamp do you want? (The small one.)
- How: Asks about method or manner. How do I send this? (You fill out a form.)
- How many: Asks about quantity (countable). How many stamps do you need? (Three stamps.)
- How much: Asks about quantity (uncountable) or cost. How much is this letter? (Two dollars.) How much sugar is in the coffee?
- How often: Asks about frequency. How often do you visit the post office? (Once a month.)
- How soon: Asks about time until an event. How soon will it arrive? (In three days.)
- How fast: Asks about speed. How fast does mail travel? (Very fast.)
- How slow: Asks about lack of speed. How slow is regular mail? (Slower than express.)

- Tracking number: A number to follow your package.
- Postage: The cost to send mail.
- Return address: Your address on the letter.
- Form: A paper to fill with information.
- Delivery: The act of bringing mail.
- Express: Fast mail.
