MODE 1: The Foundation: ‘To Be’ for Daily Responsibilities

In Mode 1, we use only the verb ‘to be’ (am, are, is, was, were, will be). We use it to describe states or conditions related to responsibilities. Remember, no action verbs here!

Present State

  • I am busy with work.
  • She is responsible for cleaning.
  • They are tired from their chores.

Past State

  • I was very busy yesterday.
  • He was responsible for cooking dinner.
  • We were late for our duties.

Future State

  • I will be busy tomorrow.
  • She will be responsible for the new project.
  • They will be ready for their chores.

MODE 2: The Flow: Continuous Actions for Daily Responsibilities

In Mode 2, we talk about actions happening now, in the past, or in the future. We use ‘to be’ + a verb ending in -ing.

Present Continuous

  • I am working on my computer.
  • She is cleaning the house.
  • They are studying for their exams.

Past Continuous

  • I was cooking when you called.
  • He was washing the car this morning.
  • We were discussing our tasks.

Future Continuous

  • I will be attending a meeting at 10 AM.
  • She will be doing laundry this evening.

MODE 3: The Perspective: Simple Tenses for Daily Responsibilities

Mode 3 uses simple tenses to talk about regular actions or facts. We will also learn about declarations, affirmations, negations, and questions.

Simple Present (Declarations)

  • She cleans her room on Saturdays.
  • They have many responsibilities.

Simple Present (Affirmations for emphasis, negations, questions)

  • Affirmation: I do work hard.
  • Negation: I do not work on Sundays. (Or: I don’t work on Sundays.)

  • Affirmation: She does clean the kitchen.
  • Negation: She does not clean the garage. (Or: She doesn’t clean the garage.)
  • Question: Does she clean every day?

Simple Past

  • I finished my work.
  • She helped with the chores.
  • They studied for the test.

Simple Future

  • I will start work soon.
  • She will finish her tasks later.
  • They will help with dinner.

MODE 4: The Completion: Perfect Tenses for Daily Responsibilities

Mode 4 talks about actions that are completed before a certain time. We use ‘have/has/had/will have’ + the past participle.

Present Perfect

  • I have finished my report. (It is done now.)
  • She has cleaned her office. (Her office is clean now.)
  • They have completed their assignments. (Their assignments are done now.)

Past Perfect

  • I had finished my tasks before lunch. (My tasks were done before lunch time.)
  • She had gone to work before I woke up. (She left for work before I woke up.)
  • We had eaten dinner when you arrived. (Dinner was finished when you arrived.)

Future Perfect

  • By 5 PM, I will have completed my project. (My project will be done by 5 PM.)
  • By next week, she will have started her new job. (She will start her new job before next week ends.)
  • They will have cleaned the entire house by noon. (The house will be clean by noon.)

MODE 5: The Strategy: Modals and WH-Questions for Daily Responsibilities

Mode 5 uses modals to talk about obligation, possibility, or permission, and WH-questions to ask for specific information.

Modals for Responsibilities

  • I must finish my work today. (Strong obligation)
  • You should help your parents with chores. (Suggestion)
  • He can do the dishes. (Ability)
  • She may start her new job next month. (Possibility)
